What is GEO? A practical guide for Hong Kong companies

GEO — generative engine optimisation — is the work of getting Google AI Overviews, Gemini and other AI answers to describe your brand accurately when buyers ask.

The short answer

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation: helping AI search and AI answers understand your brand and mention it accurately when they respond to a question.

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. If your pages cannot be crawled, your facts disagree across the web, or your content never answers the question, GEO work has nothing solid to stand on.

Think of SEO as helping pages get found and clicked. Think of GEO as helping AI compose an answer that names you correctly — with the right services, districts and contact path.

Why Hong Kong companies should care

Google shows AI Overviews in Hong Kong. Buyers increasingly type full questions — “which clinic near Central…”, “reliable movers in Kowloon…” — and the answer often lists a few names directly.

If you are not among them, or you are described wrongly, you are harder to shortlist. The buyer may never open page two of classic results.

Hong Kong search is bilingual. Your English and 繁中 facts need to match. Soft machine translation that invents services will get you misquoted.

What GEO actually involves

First, consistent brand facts across site, Google Business Profile and structured data: name, services, areas, credentials, contact.

Second, answer-ready content — pages and passages that answer buyer questions in the first screen, with clear facts AI can quote.

Third, technical access: crawlable HTML, not critical copy locked only inside images or blocked scripts.

Fourth, ongoing observation: a fixed question set re-tested monthly, with date, platform, mention, accuracy and link recorded. That is what we call the Named Index.

What it cannot do

Nobody can guarantee an AI will mention you. Answers change with phrasing, location, language and time.

Treat any service that guarantees ChatGPT citations, or promises #1 in AI answers, with suspicion. Third parties decide what models say.

GEO also cannot rescue a site with broken indexation or empty service pages. Fix foundations first.

How to begin

List the twenty questions buyers ask most — in the words they actually use, English and Chinese.

Search each on Google yourself from Hong Kong. Note what the AI Overview says, who is named, and whether the description is accurate.

Then check whether your site answers those questions clearly on a public URL. That gap list is a basic GEO baseline — and a useful brief for SEO and content work too.

When you want a formal baseline and monthly re-test, that is the Named Index scorecard path. No citation guarantees; honest dated observation.
