SEO and GEO: what is the difference?

SEO gets pages found in search results. GEO gets your brand described accurately in AI answers. They share a foundation but are measured differently.

The short answer

SEO aims to get pages shown and clicked in search results. GEO aims to get AI to mention your brand accurately when it composes an answer.

One is measured in rankings, impressions and clicks. The other is measured in mentions, accuracy and whether a link appears.

Most Hong Kong businesses need both. Classic search still drives enquiries; AI answers are growing as a shortlist filter.

The shared foundation

Both depend on a crawlable site, clear structure, credible content and consistent brand facts.

If Google cannot index your services, or your name–address–phone details disagree across the web, neither SEO nor GEO will behave.

Bilingual parity matters in Hong Kong: the EN and 繁中 stories should match, or AI and search will pick the confusing version.

The main differences

SEO leans on keywords, page targeting, internal links, technical health and relevant authority.

GEO leans on whether facts are clear, whether passages can be quoted directly, and whether sources describe you consistently.

A page can rank well and still be misquoted by AI if the first paragraphs are vague. A brand can be named in AI and still need SEO to win the click when someone wants the full site.

Which comes first

Most companies should fix SEO technical foundations first, then add GEO brand facts and answer content.

Running both together is usually the cheapest and steadiest route once the crawl/index basics are sound.

If you are unsure where you stand, a technical audit plus a Named Index baseline is a clean start — map first, then spend.

How to measure

SEO uses Search Console impressions, clicks and the enquiry paths those visits produce.

GEO re-tests a fixed question set monthly, recording mention, accuracy and whether a link is shown — dated, method noted.

Do not chase rankings alone, and do not chase AI screenshots alone. Put both next to real enquiries: forms, WhatsApp, calls.
